It’s better to light one candle, than to sit cursing the darkness.
This is one of my favorite quotes, and for my daily work, it keeps me trying. Some of the problems facing the world are seemingly insurmountable. It’s discouraging. But it’s not hopeless.
Imagine yourself in a large, empty theater. It’s pitch black, not a single light anywhere. That could be pretty scary, right? Now imagine that way down there on the stage, a single actor lights a candle. All of a sudden, everything is different. That spotlight will seem to light the whole room.
After a while, more candles will be lit until the stage is bright and illuminated.
One person at a time, we can do that. One needy child. One scholarship. One new health clinic. A thousand candles. Light.
